Luggage is sold in inches and flown by rules written in inches, and the two rarely line up. This page puts the published limits next to the sizes we make, quotes each airline in its own words, and says where our cases do not fit.
Our 20″ shell fits the 22 by 14 by 9 inch limit that Delta and American publish.
The 24″ and 28″ shells travel in the hold and expand by about a fifth.
One quart bag, nothing over 3.4 ounces per container, in the bag you carry on.
A 20-inch case is twenty inches tall including the wheels and the retracted handle. Airlines measure the same way, and American Airlines says so in one line.
That is the sentence to keep in mind when a case is advertised as a 22-inch carry-on. Twenty-two inches of shell plus wheels puts the bag over the line, and the sizer bin at the gate settles it.
Cannot exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm) including handles and wheels

| Carrier | Cabin limit | Also stated | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delta Air Lines | 22 × 14 × 9 in | 45 linear in | 12 September 2026 |
| American Airlines | 22 × 14 × 9 in | handles and wheels count | 12 September 2026 |
| Southwest Airlines | 24 × 16 × 10 in | attachments count | 12 September 2026 |
Delta publishes two numbers, a limit per side and a limit for the three added together.
Southwest allows a larger bag in the cabin, and the same page names the part travellers forget.
Combined length + width + height of baggage must not exceed 45 linear inches (114 cm)

| Our shell | Against the limits above | Expansion |
|---|---|---|
| 20" carry-on | Inside every limit on this page | No expansion zip |
| 24" shell | Over the Delta and American limit | Expands about a fifth |
| 28" shell | Checked on every carrier here | Expands about a fifth |
| 16" case in the four piece set | Fits under the seat on most carriers | Boarding size |
Our 20-inch carry-on sits inside every limit above. The 24-inch shell clears the Southwest allowance on height but not on depth once you use the expansion zip, so treat it as a checked case unless you fly with the zip closed and measure first. The 28 is a checked case everywhere.
The 24 and 28 inch shells open a zip around the middle and gain about twenty percent of volume. The gain is real and it runs one way: a packed and expanded case will not close back down until you unpack it.
The 20-inch carry-on has no expansion zip. We left it out because the case exists to pass a cabin rule, and a bag that can grow past the rule fails it in the one moment that counts.

Soft bags carry a litre figure because their shape changes with what you put in them. Sixty litres holds a week of clothes for one person, or a weekend for two. Forty litres in backpack form takes a laptop, a change of clothes and a toilet bag, and it lies flat for the scanner.
For the seat in front of you, Delta describes the allowance in its own words. A tote or a cosmetic case belongs in that space. A 40-litre backpack, packed full, usually does not.
personal item free of charge (such as a purse, laptop bag or item of similar size that will fit underneath the seat in front of you)

The Transportation Security Administration states the rule plainly, and then names the limit per container.
Our wide-open cosmetic cases hold a quart bag upright and open flat on a hotel counter, which is the reason they exist. They are not a sealed case, so anything that can leak travels inside the quart bag first.
You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint.

These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item.

A hard shell protects what it surrounds and refuses to change shape. For a bag that has to squeeze into a car boot around other luggage, the soft oxford set gives more and forgives an extra jumper.
For a single overnight stay, none of the cases here are the right answer. A 60-litre duffle weighs about three pounds empty and takes a night's clothes without the wheels, the handle and the eight pounds that come with them.
Single shells
Carry-on at 20 inches, checked shells at 24 and 28. These ship as a case with a weekender duffel and a toiletry bag, and only the checked sizes expand.
